TAHIRAH YASIN KHAN

Counsellor and Psychotherapist in London and Gloucestershire

I am a fully qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist, registered member of the
British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and a member of the Muslim Counsellors and Psychotherapists Network (MCAPN). I adhere to the ethical framework of the BACP by holding full professional insurance, an enhanced DBS clearance and being committed to continual professional development and regular supervision.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I have a background of working as a support worker, working with asylum seekers, refugees and victims of sexual and domestic abuse.

I have a FdA in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling and Psychotherapy, a BA (Hons) in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling and in order to enhance myself I am presently studying an MSc in Neuroscience.

I am committed to offering a service which is welcoming to all backgrounds, races, religions and cultures in a supportive, inclusive and non-discriminatory manner.  I am especially interested in spiritual issues, how we attach meaning to our lives and how our beliefs and faith impact the issues we face.

I can offer counselling sessions in English or Urdu, giving you the flexibility to choose the language you are most comfortable with expressing yourself.

COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSIONS

Most of my work is long-term and open-ended. This means that therapy will progress for as long as we both feel necessary for you.

From my experience, it takes time and willingness to get to the core of the issue.

Therapy is a process leading to real change and deep transformation

I work with empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness as the foundation of my  therapy. My work is grounded in humanistic and integrative theories and I use a holistic and creative approach.

My belief is that we all have the resources within us to realise our own potential. The way I work is unique to each client and tailored to your individual needs.

TESTIMONIALS

“Although I was wary of starting therapy at first, talking with Tahirah was definitely the right step in helping me figure out and work through various problems I had both personally and academically.

She would always listen intently and allow me to work through my feelings in a practical yet empathetic way and provided challenging insights and new perspectives which helped shift my way of thinking and overall outlook.  As a teenager, it is easy to feel misunderstood, but working with Tahirah has made me feel that I am not just understood but also accepted for the way I am.

I often find myself going back to her guidance when I need both practical and especially emotional advice and can safely say that I recommend her for anyone who needs a safe place to work through their struggles, no matter their age, both long and short-term.”

A 16 year old client.

“It was difficult acknowledging that I needed therapy and help. Being a male from an Asian background, I felt there was the added stigma associated with mental health and the fear of being judged because of it.

Speaking to Tahirah has been really helpful. She has been kind throughout the process and very understanding. She has been able to empathise and relate to my challenges which has helped me to feel comfortable and to open up. I’ve shared things that I didn’t think I ever would with anybody. It’s been painful talking about some of the sensitive subjects that have affected me throughout my life but it’s helped me to understand why I behave and feel the way I do.  She helped me to understand that there isn’t anything wrong with me, rather to accept that I’m different and to be gentler with myself.

I’m on a journey and it’s not over, but I’m glad I took the step of seeking help.”

Male client 35, Manchester.

“I had a few counselling sessions with you last year. I just wanted to say a huge thank you. You got me through the worse time in my life.

I've been in a much better place since. Alhumdulillah I got re-married a few months ago too. It’s going really well.

Honestly appreciate your time and efforts.”

Female client domestic violence victim 27, London.

"I would highly recommend Tahirah's counselling services for any woman who is struggling with the challenges of life including relationships, in-laws, marriage, workplace issues and just generally feeling isolated and different from others.

She is an excellent listener, empathetic and feels your feelings with you. I did a series of weekly online 50-minute sessions with her and always looked forward to speaking with her. With any counselling to be successful you must be willing to look inwards to truly understand what drives your thoughts and emotional responses...

Tahirah has a special way of asking the right questions to help you unlock your thought patterns and think about why we act the way we do and then challenging her clients to try life in a different way. If you want to start the journey of healing - then self-compassion and self-inquiry is essential and working with a counsellor to guide you on how to do this is the fastest way...

I've had several failed starts with different counsellors who I couldn't connect with whereas With Tahirah I connected instantly because of her friendly personality and sensitive approach.

I would encourage anyone to take up counselling with Tahirah and use the services on her site if you want to live a more intentional and less stressed life!"

Female client 35, mother of 2, London.

“I celebrate who you are, your uniqueness and your tenacity. Hearing about your journey and how hard you've had to work to get where you are now has been inspiring and incredibly moving Tahirah.

I am glad to know you, to work alongside you and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for you here.”

Manager at Self Space, London.

I worked with Tahirah for over six weeks, both face-to-face and on virtual appointments and learnt many coping mechanisms from her as well as exploring different dynamics that I lacked understanding.

What I really admire Tahirah for, is her selfless effort in understanding cultural and faith dynamics. She never once made me feel belittled or judged for  wrong choices or my negative behaviour patterns as we share the same faith that I would have been terrified to share within my society, she made me feel safe and allowed me to be open.

Working with Tahirah made me feel that I was able to seek support and not hide away. She taught me self-love and care and enhanced my self-esteem by boosting my confidence and allowing me to heal past mistakes. Tahirah’s leadership has made me strive to fulfil my true potential. I’ve learned things through her tutelage that would never have crossed my mind and I’d like to thank her for the difference she has made in my journey. I feel very lucky to have her as a mentor and of all the hard, but necessary, lessons that she has taught me.

I now have a tremendous amount of faith in myself and my abilities, because of her ongoing encouragement.”
